Introducing Our Western Birds
I bought this book a while back on eBay and learnt a simple lesson. Never buy a book on eBay before checking the price on Amazon first. Still I love it enough to make myself forget how much I paid for it.
I love the simple graphic style of the pictures.
I thought they would look great framed on a wall so I scooted on over to Amazon (wiser the second time round) and bought another two copies. I really have a remarkable ability to bounce back from these things, no ? But at only $2 a piece, I felt the only way to recover from my mistake was to buy more of them. One is destined to decorate a wall (I do feel bad about dismantling books but justified it by reminding myself how many copies of this book I have now bought) and one is heading out for someone's birthday .
This has been a weekend marred by a stomach bug for the two year old and a really bad cold for the eight month old. I really need more tissues. At least it happened this weekend rather than next weekend when my beautiful boy hits his magical third birthday. We are having a small and not so classy affair with an Easter egg hunt, a pinata and a table brimming with playdough. He has requested a bunny rabbit cake so I'll let you know how *that works out*.
Wooohoo, it ain't a party without tantrums and tears, and that's just the adults.
Good Monday morning to you all.

I have had really good success with the Martha bunny cake that was in her Easter issue 2 years ago (? I think). The one you cook in a big pyrex bowl and then carve. It doesn't seem to be online and if you don't have that issue, I can help you figure out how to do it. (It is pretty easy, since I am totally NOT a baker.)

Those illustrations are great! There are few things I love more than sweet little stylized birds.
Growing up we celebrated Easter with some family friends every year and the other mom would always make a bunny cake. She would make one round cake and a bunch of cupcakes, then cut the round cake in half, stick them together with frosting and lay them cut side down on a platter, then cut up two cupcakes to make the head and tail. She would frost the whole thing white then stick in some paper ears and use candy for the face. The platter was decorated with some green dyed coconut and jelly beans. Very very cute!

I made a miffy cake for one of my beautiful goddaughters. one big round cake for the head and ears, another for the body, arms and feet. its a simple shape and easy to ice in white with black eyes and an orange dress. not sure if miffy is bunny enough for easter though? and LOVE the bird book...!

I think that illustrator is Charles Harper (?) ... even if it's just someone similar, you'd like him. He's still alive and working in the same style. He is completely awesome.

We have a birthday girl next weekend but we decided to do the celebrating early. Those illustrations will be great as art.
